“Fact-Checking in an Era of Fake News: Perspectives from a Professional Fact-checker"

Angie Drobnic Holan is the editor of PolitiFact, the politics fact-checking website. She directs, assigns and edits PolitiFact’s coverage of national politics and the 2018 midterm elections. She started with PolitiFact as a reporter and was on the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for fact-checking the 2008 election.

Holan will discuss the growth of fact-checking and the methods that fact-checkers typically use to combat misinformation. She will discuss the rise of fake news since 2016, varying definitions for fake news, and how journalists work to inform the public with accurate information. She will give an overview of the current political climate and a preview of PolitiFact’s work fact-checking the 2018 midterm elections.
