WACRI CELEBRATES WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH and WOMEN LEADERS AROUND THE WORLD

The 21st century is predicted to be an unprecedented century for women in every sphere, including politics. Globally women as presidents or heads of state grew in the 20th century after the end of colonialism, and the United Nations recognized this trend with the UN Decade for Women (1976-85) with four world conferences on women in Mexico City (1975), Copenhagen (1980), Nairobi (1985) and Beijing (1995).

The US has just elected the largest number of women to the House of Representatives and for the first time a woman, Nancy Pelosi, has been elected as Speaker.  In 2016 Hilary Clinton was the first woman to head a major party’s presidential ticket.  What does the next decade hold for women in American politics?

Join us for a review of this global and local history and a critical discussion of why women in America, who spearheaded the women’s movement in the early 20th century, have lagged behind the world in advancing women in politics.
